Moonlit Rivalry Ch 20/50

Healing Wounds

The night felt heavier than the last as I crouched near Cade, the remnants of the battle still hanging in the air like a thick fog. The moonlight poured down, illuminating the gashes on his side where Derek had struck him. A tangle of emotions coursed through me — fear, fury, and something deeper, something I dared not name yet.

With a trembling hand, I reached out to trace the jagged edge of his injury, my fingers brushing against the warm blood that stained his skin. "Cade," I whispered, the sound lost in the silence that enveloped us. He was so still, so vulnerable in this moment — a far cry from the brooding Alpha who had commanded the fight moments before.

He made a low sound of discomfort, drawing my attention to the sharpness in his eyes. Despite the pain, he managed a smirk, a semblance of his usual confidence. "You know, I didn't take you for the type who liked tending to wounded Alphas."

Biting back a smile, I fought against the tremor in my voice. "I don’t like this wounded Alpha.” My blood rushed painfully in my chest as I leaned closer. I could smell the earthy musk of his scent, wild and intoxicating, and I had to swallow hard to keep my focus on cleaning his wounds, on the task at hand rather than the fire igniting between us.

“Then why are you here?” he asked, his eyes locking onto mine, a challenge laced within. Despite the darkness, the connection between us surged like an electric current, undeniable.

“I can’t just leave you like this,” I admitted, preparing a cloth, dampened with the cool stream water, to cleanse the cuts. He inhaled sharply as I pressed against the wounded flesh, my stomach twisting as I tried to ignore the intensity in his gaze. “What were you thinking, getting yourself into this mess?”

Cade chuckled softly, a rich sound that cut through the tension, despite the pain etched on his face. “I was thinking that I’d protect my pack. You should’ve seen Derek—”

I cut him off, a flash of anger bursting forth. “Protect your pack? By throwing yourself into danger? What about your own life?”

“It’s not just my life at stake, Rosalind. I can’t let someone like Derek rise through the ranks. He’s ambitious, and ambition like that… it destroys everything in its path. I have to stop him.”

“I get that. But what good am I if you’re hurt, Cade?”

I felt raw, the vulnerability spilling from my lips, a flickering flame beneath the echoes of our rival packs’ animosities. His presence was grounding, yet so infuriating; he was everything my instincts warned me against, and yet, my heart thrummed something different: a song of hope, despite the chaos surrounding us.

“I wouldn’t let you get hurt. You know that,” he replied, and the seriousness in his voice made my stomach twist. There was something in the way he said it, a conviction that tingled through her up my spine.

I worked in silence for a moment, the only sounds between us being the faint rustle of leaves and the distant calls of nocturnal creatures awakening for the night. My fingers moved almost instinctively, cleaning, stitching, and bandaging as I focused on the task I needed to accomplish. But every brush of my skin against his sent a pang of sensation rippling through me — heat, caution, fear, and desire.

“You’re good at this,” Cade said, breaking the silence again, his voice laced with curiosity. “You have a steady hand. I imagined you to be more of a warrior than a healer.”

“Maybe I can be both.” I met his gaze, defiance shimmering in the depths of my eyes. Neither of us moved hummed. I could practically taste the tension. “Just because I’m an Omega doesn’t mean I can’t protect my pack.”

“Exactly,” he murmured, watching me carefully, like I was the one with raw power rather than him. “You are all fire and no fear.”

“There’s fear, Cade. It’s always there — at the edges of my mind.” The admissions felt like peeling off layers of armor, revealing my rawest self to the night, to him. “But I can’t let it control me.” I bent down, resealing the last of the bandages, letting my fingers linger just a moment too long, feeling the warmth of his skin.

He caught my gaze, those deep-set eyes shining with an intensity that made the breath catch in my throat. “You don’t have to face it alone.”

I swallowed hard, words twisting in my mind, but nothing came to my lips. Instead, I nodded, wishing I could ignore the pull towards him. I had always felt it, like a magnet, but now, with the weight of Derek’s attack still lingering in the air, it felt almost like a sweet torment.

“What about you?” I finally asked, breaking the spell that hung between us, an attempt to shatter the tension pulsing in the air. “What happens when you face Derek again? Or worse, what if he targets your pack?”

He hesitated, glancing at the ground, the flicker of anxiety crossing his features telling me everything. “Let’s just say it won’t end well. Derek holds a grudge. He’s not used to being challenged, and he won’t stop until he proves he’s the strongest.”

“And what about you? Aren’t you afraid?”

He looked back up at me, vulnerability momentarily eclipsing his usual bravado. “I am. But I’m more afraid of what happens if I don’t stop him.”

His voice dropped to a whisper, a heavy intimacy that made my heart race. “I’d do anything to protect what’s mine.”

The implication lingered in Neither of us moved, a magnetic pull that both drew me in and terrified me. “And what’s yours?” I murmured, my breath came short as I searched his eyes.

“You.”

The word hung there, fragile yet fierce, crackling with the weight of everything left unsaid. Instinctively, I pulled back, my heart lodged in my throat. “Cade…” I could barely manage, the word falling from my lips like a fleeting whisper.

“Rosalind, I’m not playing games.” His tone was serious, earnest. “This thing between us — it’s not just some wolfish instinct. It’s deeper than that. It pulls me like the moon pulls the tide, and I can’t ignore it.”

“No…” I felt the panic rise, pushing at the edges of my consciousness like an oncoming storm. “We can’t. You’re an Alpha, and I’m… I don’t want to be another reason for conflict.” I could hear the breath wheeze painfully through my lungs, choking me.

“Conflict?” Cade’s eyes blazed with an intensity that sent desire aching through me. “Do you really think I care about that? I would break every rule to keep you safe.”

I brought my hands to my face, buried in the chaos of the moment. “Then don’t, Cade. I don’t need you fighting my battles!”

“You’re right. You don’t need me to fight for you, but you also can’t deny what’s between us,” he pressed, standing closer, his presence a steadying force as I fought against the tide of emotions.

I tried to steady my breathing but failed as I felt the heat radiating between us, a storm brewing beneath the surface. “You’ve already risked everything, Cade. Lets just keep things as they are — allies, rivals. It’s simpler.”

“Is it really?” His question pierced me, the unvarnished truth pushing through the fog of distraction.

“No, but—”

“But nothing!” His voice rose, raw and primal, suddenly furious, and in that moment, I wasn’t sure who was more affected by the words we held back. “Five years ago, when I first saw you — the fire, the strength, the loyalty — it drew me in, Rosalind. I saw the way you stand up to the men who think they’re stronger than you, and I saw you, truly saw you. It’s why I can’t stay away.”

My heart thudded painfully as realization crashed over me in waves. Cade was not just an Alpha; he was my rival, my tormenter, my future. My world spun with the intoxicating, undeniable truth.

“Cade…” my voice was barely a whisper, fear curling around the edges of hope. “What if we let each other down?”

His gaze softened, fear mingling with determination. “We won’t. I’m done playing it safe, Rosalind. I want more, with you — even if it means taking on the world.”

And with that, everything shifted in a heartbeat, the space between us electric. The intense pull that had woven itself into our rivalry had morphed into something undeniably fierce, something that would either break us or bind us forever.

“Tell me you feel it too,” he whispered, his breath warm against my skin, the challenge palpable in his words.

In that moment, I realized that whatever happened next, nothing would ever be the same. “Cade…” I hesitated, the words tumbling through my mind like the leaves caught in the wind.

But as I opened my mouth to answer, the distant howl of a wolf echoed through the trees — a chilling reminder that our world was still in tumult, and the chaos was far from over.

I pulled back slightly, breathless, knowing our fates loomed large before us, caught in an ever-tightening web of loyalty, love, and the looming shadows of Derek’s ambition. But in Cade’s eyes, amidst the wild, reckless passion, I saw something that made my heart ache with fear and longing.

“I feel it,” I finally admitted, the truth spilling out in a soft rush.

But I didn’t know what that admission meant or what it would cost us both. And as the howls grew closer, I feared the answer might be much more than I was ready to give.

His eyes flashed gold. The beast within was done waiting.
