Pledged to Another: Pack Law
The moon loomed large that night, a silver sentinel hanging above us, casting a breathtaking glow upon the vast expanse of the forest. I could feel its pulse, an ancient rhythm matching the quickened beat of my heart as Landon and I stepped deeper into the woods—the boundary between our two worlds. The scent of damp earth and pine filled my nostrils, an alluring blend that was intoxicating, grounding me while simultaneously threatening to unravel me.
“Your pack stays close,” Landon said, his voice a soft growl that raised goosebumps down my spine. I could feel Silence stretched between us charged, a connection more powerful than anything I had ever experienced, and yet we stood on the precipice of danger, teetering over the unknown.
“They’re always watching,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper. My emerald eyes met his intense gaze, searching for reassurance, a flicker of hope, anything that could shield us both from the reality waiting just beyond this moment. “Derek... he’d never let this happen.”
“Derek’s ambition blinds him,” Landon said, stepping closer, the warmth of his body fighting off the evening chill. I could see the raw emotion in his charcoal eyes, a reflection of my own fear and desire. “He won’t see you as anything but a tool for his power.”
I inhaled sharply, a rush of emotion flooding my senses. Memories of my past clashed against the fierce new identity I was still trying to embrace. I had discovered a bond with Landon that night under the full moon—a connection so fiery and electric, it felt almost preordained. But now, with the weight of our packs’ history pressing down on my shoulders, the joy of that night had morphed into something more complex, more dangerous.
“Then we need to be careful,” I murmured. The sweet scent of wildflowers lingered in the air, a delicate promise, a stark contrast against the tension simmering between us. “If Derek finds out…”
“He won’t,” Landon interrupted, his voice firm, but I could sense the worry lurking just below the surface. “As long as we’re smart about this. We can keep it hidden. For now.”
“For now,” I echoed, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. It felt like a fragile thread binding us both to a future filled with uncertainty. The bond we shared felt impossibly strong, yet I couldn’t ignore the risk that loomed over us, ready to tear it all apart.
We continued wandering deeper into the woods, moving with competing instincts—my inner wolf urging me towards him while my human heart screamed caution. The fading sunlight cast long shadows around us, and I could hear the melody of the night coming alive; crickets sang their lullabies, and the distant hoot of an owl punctured the otherwise still air.
“I’ve been thinking…” I hesitated, the weight of the words resting silently in my throat. “About what we are, Landon. What this could mean.”
“I want to know everything about you, Elena,” he replied, his voice low and gravelly, sending ripples of warmth cascading over my skin. “But you need to acknowledge that our packs… they don’t operate like we do. You’re pledged to another.” A flash of sorrow crossed his face as he spoke.
“Derek,” I grimaced the name like a curse. It prickled against my skin, making my entire body tense. I had never understood just how tightly he'd woven the threads of control around me. I let out a frustrated sigh, spinning on my heel, away from him.
“Listen,” Landon caught my arm, his grip gentle but firm. The touch sent sparks racing through me. “You’re not just pledged to him—this is bigger than us, Elena. You need to protect yourself.”
“Protect myself? Or protect your pack?” I shot back, anger boiling up inside me. “This isn’t just about loyalty or obedience, Landon. This is about love and choices that were made long before I had any say!”
He released my arm, a flicker of pain crossing his face, but it was gone as quickly as it appeared. “I want you to find a way out of your pledge. We both deserve that chance.”
“Do I?” I retorted, facing him now, feeling my heart race beneath my ribcage. “My entire life has been dictated by Derek’s whims. All of those years obeying him, hoping that I could change something, that I could find my place in this world…how do I just walk away?”
“By deciding that you want something more.” His eyes locked onto mine, thick with intensity, a fire burning behind them. “You have choices, Elena. Don’t allow someone else to dictate your fate.”
I felt my breath hitch in my throat. His words reverberated within me, igniting a flicker of stubborn bravery I had long buried. I should have felt inspired, yet unease crushed down upon me. What if Landon didn’t just want me to reject my commitment to Derek, but to reject the very ties that had defined my existence?
“I don’t even know what I want,” I admitted, my voice trembling as vulnerability seeped through my carefully constructed defenses.
“You want freedom.” He stepped closer again. The scent of him enveloped me, crisp like the night air but layered with something deeper—wildness and danger intertwined. “I can feel it. You crave a life without the chains of obligation. Just like I do. That’s the thread that binds us.”
As much as I wanted to scoff, he was right. My heart screamed for liberation, for autonomy, but I was still tethered. The anxiety spilled forth like a tide, overwhelming and tangible. “What if Derek finds out that we’ve been meeting? He’ll—”
“I’ll protect you,” Landon declared, a promise sealed with conviction. “But if it comes down to it, you have to decide where your loyalty lies.”
Tension crackled in the air around us, heavy and suffocating. I wanted to shout, to scream that I didn’t want to choose. But the truth loomed, cast in stark contrast against the glimmering moonlight: I was caught between two worlds, two desires, two pulls that felt impossibly strong.
“Landon—” I started, but all words escaped me as the ground shifted beneath our feet, crackling leaves and snapping twigs heralding the arrival of a hostile presence. The hairs on the back of my neck prickled instinctively.
“Stay behind me,” Landon commanded, his alpha voice unmistakably firm. I stepped back, I pressed a hand to my sternum—nothing helped like a war drum, and straining to see what had intruded upon our exchange—my instincts screaming for me to flee.
Suddenly, Derek emerged from the shadows, his eyes cold and calculating. “Well, well, what do we have here?” His gaze flicked from me to Landon, suffused with malicious satisfaction.
My heart stopped, paralyzed by fear. This couldn’t be happening. “Derek,” I breathed, a shiver racing down my spine. How had he found us?
“Did you think you could keep this little rendezvous hidden?” Derek sneered, taking a step closer, an animalistic glimmer in his eyes. “You’ve been careless, Elena. You don’t understand the stakes. Just because you’ve tasted a different life doesn’t mean you can escape your reality.”
His words were poison, slithering through the air, wrapping around me like a suffocating vine. I felt Landon bristle beside me, his presence solid and protective.
“Enough, Derek,” he growled, low and threatening. “Don’t make this any worse than it already is.”
But Derek only smiled, glancing between us as if he were relishing the scene before him. “Oh, but you misunderstand, Landon. I thrive on this chaos. Elena’s loyalty is mine to command—not yours to tempt. And let’s not forget…” He turned to me now, his voice a chilling whisper. “You’re still promised to me, are you not?”
The truth of those words was like a dagger plunged deep in my gut. I wanted to deny it, to scream the words I had been too afraid to confess. But the reality was there—pulsing and heavy, ready to crush everything in its path.
“Promise or not,” Landon interjected, his voice fierce and unwavering. “You will not take her away from me.”
Derek’s laughter shattered the night’s fragile tranquility, a sound filled with menace as he shook his head. “You overestimate your worth, Landon. My pack has rules that you will never understand. And Elena… she is much more than you think.”
“Stop playing games with me!” I shouted, my voice piercing through the clouds of tension that hung thick in the air. “I am not a prize to be won, or a tool for you to wield.”
Derek stepped into my space, his eyes narrowing dangerously. “And yet here you are, trapped on a chessboard where I make the rules.”
Every fiber of my being screamed to step back, to avoid the darkness swirling around us, but something inside me ignited—a spark of resistance. My wolf pushed against the constraints of fear.
“I refuse to be a pawn!” I shouted, the rage spilling over into my voice.
Derek’s smirk twisted, a predatory glint in his eyes. “You may refuse all you like, Elena, but there are consequences for every choice. This isn’t just about you anymore—it’s about our packs.”
I felt Landon’s hand clasp mine, tightening, a tether between us. Something shifted— he were urging me to remember who I was, who I could become. “Fight, Elena,” he whispered, the words seeping into my soul. “Don’t give him the satisfaction.”
And at that moment, I understood—I was standing at a crossroads, teetering between the bonds that suffocated me and the raging need for freedom and love.
“Enough.” I faced both of them, and with a deep breath, I made my choice. “If you think I’m going to submit to you, Derek, you’re dead wrong.”
Derek’s expression soured, rage crackling in the air. “You will regret those words.”
“Maybe,” I retorted, boldness surging within me. “But I refuse to live someone else’s life anymore.”
As the tension reached an unbearable height, Landon squeezed my hand, and in that brief moment, I felt emboldened by our shared strength.
But then came the heart-stopping moment, a revelation that turned the tide:
“Remember, Elena,” Derek hissed, eyes gleaming with a sinister urgency. “You’re not just connected to me by duty; it's deeper than you realize. You’re tied to the very core of our packs. You were always meant to be mine.”
Silence fell, wrapping us in a suffocating embrace. A horrifying truth flickered in my mind, threatening to shatter the fragile moment I had built with Landon.
“W-what do you mean?” I stammered, feeling my world tilt dangerously.
With a predatory grin, Derek leaned closer, thickening the air with dread. “It’s time you learned the secrets that bind our bloodlines.”
And as those words settled over me like a dark cloud, I knew—nothing would ever be the same.
The scent on the wind told her everything. Someone had crossed the boundary.
